CENTRE CLOSED 30th JULY

CENTRE CLOSED 30th of JULY 2024 – Please note that Feathers and Fur Falconry Centre will be closed on Tuesday the 30th of July for our scheduled zoo inspection. We will reopen on Wednesday the 31st of July from 10am – 5pm. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Charlie appreciation post!!!! She is such a charac Charlie appreciation post!!!! She is such a character of a bird. As an Indian Eagle Owl they have a lot of character and charm but boy is she two different personalities!!! Sometimes like today she flies like a pro and treats me nicely, others she sit on the roof and clock me round the back of the head the minute I turn my back!!! But I wouldn’t have it any other way! Fun fact: Charlie hates Olivia for no reason what so ever, so much so that Olivia isn’t allowed near the flying field when Charlie is about!!!!! #eagleowl #owlsofinstagram
Moult season isn’t the kindest to our poor Amos!! Moult season isn’t the kindest to our poor Amos!! She has lost her plumicorns! ( tufts on her head ) Don’t worry they will grow back. Plumicorns are thought to help with camouflage and communication, thank goodness though they are not her ears though like people think otherwise she wouldn’t be able to hear her dinner at this time of year!!!!
VOLUME UP!!!!! It’s happened!!! Elvis is mimicking VOLUME UP!!!!! It’s happened!!! Elvis is mimicking!!! Olivia amazingly managed to record Elvis (a feat in itself as he doesn’t like to talk if people are watching!!) mimicking Norman’s low hoots. It’s very quiet so you have to turn up the volume and I have edited out some of the long pauses between but how fabulous is this!!!!!? Should we have guesses on what’s coming next??

Alice has been struggling to stand and feed on her round perch due to the arthritis in her feet so today with all the sessions cancelled due to the heat I had time to make her a flat shelf perch. We have space for our Junior Falconry Day for Sund We have space for our Junior Falconry Day for Sunday the 16th of August at 10am. For those ages 8-12 years old including 1 supervising adult for just £80. Learn all about how we care for our fabulous team of birds including how to hold them properly then how we weigh them each day. Get your hands dirty with some cleaning out (don’t worry we don’t pick the poopy ones!!) Food preparation (you are welcome to skip this activity if you would like but it’s always fun to have a go) Learning some of the names of the equipment we use and how this is still used in our English language such as the well know parent one in the summer holidays- ‘end of your tether!!’ Learning how to find a bird if it goes for a wonder using our telemetry system and gps! Learning how to tie a falconry knot with just one hand, which actually comes in far hander than you imagine!! And finally heading out to the field for training, and free flying our amazing birds to your falconry gloved fist. There are currently 3 spaces left so if you already have a gift voucher and you have been waiting to use it, or if you would like to do something very different this weekend with your little one please do drop a pm and we will send you all the information to secure your spot.
How stunning are Norman's feathers?! 😍 The gorgeo How stunning are Norman's feathers?! 😍 The gorgeous, intricate feathers on an owls face aren't for looking beautiful (although, of course they do). They actually help the owl to hear incredibly quiet sounds made by their prey. The feathers delicate structure allows soundwaves to travel through the face quickly to the ears! 🦉 To learn more facts like this, and to get close enough to see these feathers for yourself, why not come along on an Owl Handling Experience or Half Day Bird of Prey Experience? You can also just pop in to visit the centre with no need to book and a ticket which allows all day entry.
