Its only taken 16 years of people telling me we sh Its only taken 16 years of people telling me we should!! So I have! Introducing our Amazon wish list. For those that know us we dislike asking for help but know that people love to support the centre, but money comes with HMRC shaped red tape so we are always grateful for gifts of things we use daily.

This list included things that we use all the time such as sponges and disinfectant, but also a few cheeky bits like toys for Elvis and a few higher priced items that we are trying to save for. Thank you for even taking the time to look.

Please join me in wishing Katrina a very Happy Bir Please join me in wishing Katrina a very Happy Birthday. Honestly without her I don’t know how any of our amazing gift shop would function, nor would I ever find myself out from under the pile of paperwork. She is an all round beautiful and wonderful lady in encouraging, supporting, loving and friendship. She is a pillar to feathers and fur and we really would be lost without her. We are so grateful for the energy that she brings especially when I drag her onto our social media, I mean who else would leap through the gates like a rock star or dress as an elf (along with sarah) and do the daft stuff !!!! We wish you an amazing year and we hope that you are sitting on a beach today with cocktail in hand! Happy Birthday Katrina xxxx

Feels like magic. Feels like magic.
Kestrels are a vital and well known part of the Br Kestrels are a vital and well known part of the British countryside with films like Kes helping to increase the love we feel for this beautiful species. They are small birds with big attitudes, often chasing off birds much larger than themselves. They are loud, tenacious and very unique so are a great place to start if you want to practice your wild raptor ID.

1. Kestrels belong to the falcon family with their close cousin being the well known Peregrine Falcon. Alongside these two gorgeous species the UK is also home to the Merlin (our smallest bird of prey) and the Hobby (which migrate from Africa to breed here in the spring and summer months). Falcons are more closely related to parrots than they are to any other bird of prey making them very special in the raptor world.

2. Kestrels used to be the UK's most common and widespread bird of prey but since 2018 their population has been in free fall. No one is completely certain about why this is happening but it is most likely a combination of a loss of habitat (grassland and trees for nesting) and a lack of food. Kestrels are very heavily reliant on small mammals, which us humans poison, and insects, whose populations have also plummeted. This year the @hawkconservancy are focusing their research on understanding this decline and are aiming to raise money through a series of fundraising challenges. Head to their website if you would like to donate 💙

3. Hovering is an extremely exhausting method of hunting and yet Kestrels do it with such style! They appear to be fluttering in midair whilst keeping their heads completely still in order to use their incredible long distance vision to spot rodents in the grass below. This stabilisation is studied by us in order to improve our gyroscopic technology. This hovering is only used for hunting rodents because they are big enough to replace the energy lost. Insect hunting will be done from a perch such as a fence post or branch.

Why not come along and meet some of our amazing team including our Kestrels Bourneville and Nala on one of our flying experiences or photography days?

Is it raining?? Bailey loves a rainstorm, even tho Is it raining?? Bailey loves a rainstorm, even though he is given a fresh water bath every day he prefers to stand and shower. Our aviary roofs are fully covered to minimise the risk of illness such as bird flu and ticks which means showers are taken on the window sills!!

If you love owls please do come along and join us on one our owl handling sessions and meet our beautiful feathered team.
