🖤 Happy International Crow and Raven Appreciation 🖤 Happy International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day!!!! 🖤

We've been celebrating this important day with our little toddler Elvis! Elvis is a Common Raven (Corvus corax) and even though he has stolen our hearts we do love both crows and ravens here at Feathers and Fur.

These two corvids are very similar though so here are a few helpful ways to tell them apart:

1. Ravens are huge! It's hard to get a sense of scale sometimes but in flight Ravens are about the size of a Buzzard. If you're lucky enough to see crows and ravens in the sky together you'll easily see how small the crows are by comparison.

2. Crows are common and are found in or around most habitats up and down the country. Raven's on the other hand have been persecuted by humans so much that their numbers are much lower than they should be. Their strongholds are in mountainous regions in Scotland and along the West of England but they are doing well and starting to spread back across the country. We even see wild ones here in Bracknell now!

3. They sound different! Crows have the classic 'caw' but ravens have a gravelly 'cronk'.

4. Both have impressive beaks but Ravens definitely take the win on this one! They also have beautiful shaggy throat feathers. Our favourite way to remember it is 'a crow is a bird with a beak; a raven is a beak with a bird'!

5. In flight crows have a rounded, fan shaped tail whereas, ravens have a diamond or wedge shaped tail

So happy that I started working on bringing this l So happy that I started working on bringing this lovely lady back into work today. Charlie the Indian Eagle Owl has been off being very hormonal but today we started some work in the aviary. At 15years old she is a pro and won’t take long to bring back to weight and then to work. Charlie flies beautiful for our off site scout and beaver groups as well as staring in our Owl Handling Session.

Quick fact - Charlie really doesn’t like Olivia but Olivia loves Charlie!!! Hehehe
